As we say goodbye to the holiday season and rush toward what can feel like the longest month of the year, many of us are counting down the days until payday and looking for ways to make our money stretch as far as possible.

Many workers get an early payday in the run-up to Christmas, rather than their usual payday at the end of the month, leaving January budgets tight.

Those struggling to make their money are finally being asked to cancel unwanted subscriptions, engage in Dry January and bulk cooking in order to keep costs down.

MuscleFood frugal expert Ashley Tosh said:

“Many of us get our salaries early in December, which can be great for last-minute Christmas expenses.

“However, this means that the gap between December and January pay will extend by up to a week.

“For many families, this can make it difficult to stick to their normal budget, especially after the expensive festive period.

“January seems like a financially difficult month for many of us, but there are some steps you can take to help make the most of your money.”

How to Survive Waiting Until Payday in January

1. Dry January

This alcohol-free trend is a great opportunity to save some cash along with friends and family who are also participating. You might be surprised at how much money you can save by cutting out drinking on the weekend.

2. Monitor your purchases

Refrain from doing any unnecessary shopping for clothes and luxury goods that you can do without during the month. However, it’s not always easy to stop spending. Try searching websites for deals or discount codes when you need to buy something.

3. Sell unwanted items

Add some extra cash to your pocket by selling unwanted clothes, shoes and furniture. Take some time to go through your items and see what might happen. If you don’t wear it for a year, sell it and get your money back.

4. Cook in large quantities

Instead of buying ingredients for several different meals and cooking every night, try meal prepping. By shopping and cooking in bulk, it is cheaper to buy your own ingredients and saves you time in the week.

5. Avoid unnecessary spending

Regular habits like buying coffee or eating lunch from a local store during your lunch break are unnecessary spending habits that can be eliminated in January. Help yourself by planning ahead, buying a reusable coffee cup and making one before leaving the house each day. Prepare business lunches to help reduce expenses.

6. Check your monthly subscriptions

Now is a good time to review your bank statement and make sure you’re not paying for any unused subscriptions. You may also consider putting some subscriptions on hold until your next payday in order to limit transactions during the month.

7. Don’t accumulate unnecessary debt

Many retailers now offer ‘buy now, pay later’ plans which may be attractive after the festive period, but it’s important not to fall into the trap of relying on these services.
