Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro Interview: ATHF Season 12
interview: Aqua Teen Hunger Force co-creators and voice acting icons Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro spoke to The Natural Aristocrat® about ATHF Season 12 and classic series moments!
• Dave Willis voices Karl Protananadelwski, Meatwad, and Monette Igninoct to name a few.
• Matt Maiellaro voices the cybernetic ghost of Christmas Past from the Future/Torkatron and fellow Mooneet Air and Marcoula to name a few.
• This interview contains minor spoilers for Season 12 of ATHF.
Natural Aristocrat (Nir Regev): Which prompted the executives to come to their senses and bring them in Aqua teen hunger force behind? It really was Adult Swim’s flagship show all these years, and I never understood why it was canceled in the first place.
Does it have anything to do with Mike Lazo’s retirement? Because I know he put his foot down first and said he was “ready to move on.”
Dave Willis: We’ve always felt that way that we have all the people presenting the show and we’re all on the same page and love doing it. it is fun. There are no problems or drama and we are proud of that.
I think we always think that, but we don’t always say that. He died at a presentation of the film (Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm) In New York it was like, “We can make more of them tomorrow.” you know?’
And I feel like that kind of motivates her a little bit.
Matt Maiellaro: I think so too.
Dave Willis: I mean it was nice to take a break from it. But, you know, it seemed like it was a lot of fun making the movie and everyone enjoyed it. It was a very positive experience.
Admittedly, this doesn’t always lead to something great. They always say if everyone’s fun at making a movie ends with a good movie, Cannon Operation II It will be the best movie ever.
But I feel like the movie was proof of the pudding as well. He was great, and we’re really proud of him. These five are just an extension of that.
Natural aristocrat: Do you agree Matt?
Matt Maiellaro: Yes I agree to all of that. I’d just like to reiterate what Dave said, it’s true.
I think we’re ready to go. It’s as if there is no development, there is nothing. It’s a successful show. Just flip the switch, and we’ll go.
Natural aristocrat: I’ve always wondered why the genies from “Escape from Leprechaupolis” never returned there ATHF?
I know one of the voice actors Scott Healy has since passed away, but they were one of my favorite characters. I can still hear him say like, “Flip flop, what is that?!” till this day.
Dave Willis: Do you know who was supposed to be the main genie?
Natural aristocrat: from?
Dave Willis: Fred Schneider of the B-52s. We recorded it but it was kind of watering down the recording and we ended up going in a different direction with Scott Healey and Andy Merrill. It was great!
Yeah, maybe we’ll bring it back. Maybe Jim Fortier will do the voice. He actually voices the little genie in episode four of these five.
Carl buys a knockoff Peloton. It’s called the genie.
Natural aristocrat: I can’t wait to watch it! My favorites have always been the Carl dating episodes. My favorite episode ever was the “Mail Order Bride” episode. I’ve seen this practically 10 million times over the years.
Will there be more history episodes this season? Because their one-liners are incredibly funny.
Dave Willis: Episodes in which Karl and Master Shake compete for the same woman?
Natural aristocrat: Yes!
Dave Willis: (He laughs) This is always a winning formula!
There was also the other episode where they were trying to date the same woman and she turned out to be a parasite from outer space (“Jumpy George”).
Matt Maiellaro: Oh yeah, another funny one.
Natural aristocrat: You guys have really changed animation.
I mean, for me personally, there’s always been a certain comfort with the style of After Effects, but it’s significantly more advanced now.
ATHF Season 12 looks very fresh since you joined Bento Box Entertainment. Do you supervise this aspect directly these days or how does it work?
Matt Maiellaro: Yes, Bento Box Entertainment produced the movie and Floyd County Productions made these five new episodes.
We were very happy with the new design and more flexible movements. They kind of boosted and enhanced the colors.
It’s been the way of After Effects for that long period of time. I went away for a while. We will bring it back, enhance it, but not exaggerate it.
So we’re really happy with it. And the movie looks so great! We’ve kept that look for these five new episodes. It is a nice!
I think we storyboarded for the first time in our lives for the movie, like the way they make cartoons (He laughs). And so we did it this time too. It’s more efficient, faster, and we’re really proud of the way it looks.
Dave Willis: Yeah, I mean in the previous anime, if Shake was holding an electric blade, it would be like this (The real switchblade appears on the screen). But now he could wrap his fingers around it and turn the blade.
Matt Maiellaro: (Jokes) That’s how we got funding for the five new episodes there! Dave and his blade.
Dave Willis: I have shown to everyone in power, my sharp blade. Look at that. Can you see your reflection?
Natural aristocrat: Yes I can. (He laughs)
Matt Maiellaro: (Jokes) and the discovery saw the reversal as well.
Natural aristocrat: I won’t spoil any details but in the new first episode of Season 12, Shake is wearing a VR headset… and I can’t help but wonder if there will ever be another Aqua teen hunger force Video game?
I mean, the show lends itself to that kind of medium. I remember I was playing a PlayStation 2 game the other day.
Matt Maiellaro: Oh, I think the people who make fortnite Really interested. (He laughs)
Dave Willis: Hopefully we’ll get one of those big old pinball machines. This is what we want!
Matt Maiellaro: Yes, this is what we want. In the form of a check.
Dave Willis: And the balls, instead of being silver, are like red meatballs with eyes, like little meatballs.
It’s not round, it’s lumpy. So it’s really hard to play. very Difficult! They are sticky. They stuck to the fins.
We can never carry out our wildest dreams. This is what happened with that video game (Aqua Teen Hunger Force Zombie Ninja Pro Am). As if we were very proud of those cut scenes.
We were like: “This should be a brawl on the golf course. This needs more work!”
And they say, “We used our labor budget.”
Natural aristocrat: Dave, where did you develop a lot of Carl’s slang like “tall” and such?
Dave Willis: “Tallboys” is a Georgia thing, but I think my dad and his brothers are all from Long Island.
I think when we originally made the show, New Jersey seemed like a silly, fun thing to do. My college roommate was from Jersey, and he was very interested in the Giants. He always loved worshiping G-Men!
So I think a lot of it came from kind of channeling that.
Natural aristocrat: I hope to see the return of Karl’s “Stone Cold Lock of the Century of the Week”!
Dave Willis: (Is the voice of Karl Protananadelevsky) They won’t come back. They won’t be back until the Giants bring back (Bill) Parcells and return to their official glory!
Until then, until that day, I no longer watched the Giants. I have moved on. So I feel like shit, and I’m in withdrawal, you know, but I refuse to watch it on Sunday.
Not until they get rid of Danny Dimes. They need a tank for Caleb Williams. Then we can show them the pure power of Big Blue!
Natural aristocrat: Thanks guys, I just want to mention one of my favorite episodes from the last two seasons which is “Storage Zeebles”. the Smurfs / Gulliver’s Travels Parody. It was amazing!
Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro: Thank you!
