By Southern Staff

Murphysboro Food Pantry put together a dinner idea, and it’s under $20. Better yet, this meal contains approximately 10 servings.

According to the food pantry, the recipe is simple and only requires a few ingredients. Here’s what the store shared:

  • Whole chicken – $7.37
  • Chicken Broth (32 oz) – $1.00
  • Garlic powder (season to taste) – $1.12
  • Carrots (1 cup chopped) – 0.98
  • Celery (1 cup chopped) – 0.98
  • Onion (1/2 cup, chopped) – 0.78
  • Frozen Remis Noodles (24 oz) – $5.62
  • Butter (only needs 1 tablespoon) – $1.38

“The first step is to cut up all your produce and put it aside. Take your whole chicken and cut off the plastic. Discard the guts inside the chicken. Then take the whole chicken and put it in the stock pot and fill it with chicken stock. Fill the pot the rest of the way with water until it reaches the top of the chicken.”

“In a small skillet, sauté chopped onions, carrots and celery with butter until onions are tender and add to the stock pot with the chicken. Scrape the butter into the pot as well. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder to taste.”

“Put a lid on the stock pot and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer and cook the whole chicken for 1 hour/1.5 hours (depending on size) or until it reaches a boiling point of 165°C.

“Remove the chicken from the pot and let it cool enough to handle. Remove the chicken meat from the bones, then place the chicken meat back in the pot with the broth and vegetables, add the frozen Rem’s noodles and cook for 20 minutes until the noodles are as tender as desired.
