Powerball winning numbers for Monday, October 9, 2023

WASHINGTON, USA – The Powerball jackpot grows larger after no one was able to win Monday’s $1.55 billion jackpot.

Monday’s jackpot is the third-largest in Powerball history and the fourth-largest in any U.S. lottery game after 34 consecutive drawings. The last time someone won the jackpot was on July 19th. This streak trails the record 41 draws set in 2021 and 2022.

Wednesday’s jackpot is worth $1.73 billion, the second-largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history.

This is the first time in the game’s history that consecutive spins have generated $1 billion in prizes, according to the Powerball website.

Lottery players in California, Indiana, Oregon and Virginia matched the five white balls but not the power ball to win $1 million. A player in Florida matched five players with a Power Play and won $2 million.

If the winner matches all five numbers and the Powerball, they have the option of taking the full jackpot paid out over 30 years, or a smaller cash payout. Winners always take the cash option, which for Wednesday would be $756.6 million.

The long streak without a jackpot winner is due to the long game odds, 1 in 292.2 million, which are designed to make wins rare until the jackpots grow significantly.

Even with a smaller lump sum payout, federal taxes will eat into those winnings, and some states also impose a tax on large lottery prizes. Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
