The first three episodes of Crabopolis Lacks great ambition Rick and MortyCreate another moving harmonium. It doesn’t mean that Crabopolis They were ultimately unable to develop a similarly complex universe. But it’s just as enjoyable as a quiet comedy, albeit one filled with gods, magic, and monsters. It’s not based on Harmon’s classic live-action sitcom Communitybut Harmon captures interconnected family dynamics in his cast of offbeat, old-world characters.
Title Crabopolis It refers to a newly built city in ancient Greece, an early attempt to guide humanity toward a stable civilization. The visionary behind this city is Tyranis (Richard Ayoade), the self-proclaimed king of the city and the son of the goddess Deleria (Ted LassoHannah Waddingham) and a strange hybrid monster named Schlob (What do we do in the shadows?“Berry died.) His parents may be mysterious beings, but Tyrannis is an ordinary human being who just wants to make a mark on the world. He is also meek and insecure, which are not the best qualities for a king, making him easily overpowered by his domineering family members.
This includes his half-siblings – his muscular sister Stubbendus (Pam Murphy), whose father was a giant, and his strange fish brother Hippocampus (Duncan Trussell), whose mother was a mermaid. Stupendous is a driven warrior, while Hippocampus is a somewhat mad scientist, who is often shown inventing the building blocks of futuristic society, such as bombs and criminal profiling. Everyone in the family is deeply skeptical of Tyrannis’s ideas about civilization, but they mostly indulge him until they can find ways that his concept of the city can benefit their own interests.
As an actual goddess, Deleria is the most tyrannical of them all, belittling Tyranis’ ambitions while demanding that the people of Crabopolis worship her and build a temple to her. Harmon builds on the classic concept from Greek mythology that gods walk freely among mortals, and while the people of Crabopolis are in awe of Deleria, they also have no trouble accepting that she has decided to spend time in their city. If they get turned into random animals every now and then, it doesn’t seem to bother them too much. Crabopolis It mixes real gods and goddesses from Greek mythology, such as Hermes and Poseidon, with new creations such as Deleria and Prosidon, Poseidon’s nephew.
All the while, Harmon and his team are finding clever ways to tweak these outdated archetypes. The juxtaposition of modern ideas and concepts with old-world customs and mentality can quickly get tiring, however Crabopolis More complicated than something like Flintstones — albeit without being above goofy jokes that simply translate modern things into pre-modern times. In the multi-city sporting event Tyrannis is held as a way to bring disparate people together, fans carry rocks shaped like foam fingers. It’s an obvious joke, but at the same time it’s still reliably funny. Harmon’s strength is finding the balance between the silly and the clever Crabopolis Effectively maintains this balance.
Harmon also assembled a stellar voice cast for Crabopolis, where Ayoade gave Tyrannis the perfect combination of nebbishism and arrogance. He is the ancient mythological equivalent of the Child of Nebo, able to build his own city and declare himself king only because of the identity of his parents. Waddingham plays Deliria with regal charm, even when she’s condescending and rude to the lowly humans who worship her. as in What do we do in the shadows?Perry can make pretty much anything he says sound funny, and the good-natured, excitable Schlupp is always amusing in his relaxed debauchery.
It’s hard to say where Crabopolis It will last for his three guaranteed seasons. Harmon might run out of variations on the same basic material after a few more episodes or discover something new to say with the concept. The animation from Fox’s in-house studio Bento Box is colorful if a bit routine, and there’s nothing about it Crabopolis It feels groundbreaking or immersive in a way that will appeal to the kind of fans who have followed Harmon’s work Community And Rick and Morty. However, for anyone stuck with Fox’s other animated comedies for decades, Crabopolis It will provide some solid laughs between episodes of those comfortably familiar shows.
