The best French toast recipe
On my Food Network show, I make (among other things) this beautiful, simple, wonderful, easy, delicious, delicious French Toast, which I serve with syrup and berries to my daughter and her four friends. The girls absolutely loved it – between the six of us, we nearly polished off the entire pan.
The great thing about French toast is that you can make it right away and bake it right away…or assemble your breakfast casserole the night before and set it aside and it gets even more amazing in the fridge overnight. When you’re cooking an entire breakfast at home during the holidays, pre-made breakfast casseroles are a lifesaver. You can leave this as is, or you can mix blueberries or other fruit into all of your baking. Simple it just doesn’t get any more delicious than this. The crustier the bread, the better!
It’s amazing in a baking dish. So simple, so wonderful.
Did you use enough adjectives today?
Why is French toast casserole soggy?
It could be because of the bread you used. If the bread you start with is too soft (like white sandwich bread), it won’t absorb all the wonderful custard it should, and may end up soggy. (More on baking below.) If you find yourself with a soggy casserole, for whatever reason, try baking it a little longer until it sets somewhat.
What is the best bread to use for French toast?
I like to use a large loaf of sourdough or French bread. You want the bread you use to be nice and crunchy so it absorbs much of the creamy custard. Slightly stale bread is the best!
Should you bake French toast covered or uncovered?
Uncovered seems to work best so that the streusel topping gets crispy and caramelized. It’s everyone’s favorite part of the casserole!
What other fruits can be mixed well?
Strawberries, blackberries, or a combination of both plus blueberries would be great! During the summer, fresh peaches are delicious. You can even use apple slices for an autumn touch. There are endless possibilities!
What pairs well with French toast?
A large fresh fruit salad would be delicious. For something salty, crunchy, salty and delicious… try bacon! Who doesn’t like bacon? Candied bacon would be even more divine.
